Cue Music: “Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning, waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile…”
By 9am yesterday, I had a remarkably quiet house. With only one little boy at home, there were no squabbles, no fights, no toy arguments. My youngest wandered around a little unsure of what to do without his playmate. You see…my oldest went off to first grade.
Always a morning person, he was the first one up…to squeeze in some morning cartoons before school while eating breakfast. Over the summer, he would drag his feet as I prodded him to get dress each day. With the excitement of back to school, he was suddenly a cooperative child doling out kisses as I helped him get dressed. Then, with Batman lunchbox in hand, he made his way out the door. Happy to pose for a few photos from the mamarazzi.
As he waited in line to walk into school, his smile turned a little unsure a few times. Just briefly until he saw old friends from Kindergarten. Once into their new classroom, they eagerly looked for their names on each desk. They were happily greeted by a goodie bag with a morning snack, pencils and erasers. I watched as little hands slowly opened the top of their new desks. Little smiles emerged as they realized that it was their own space.
Parents slowly said their goodbyes. A few classmates shed a few tears. Then we made our ways home to slightly quieter homes. Me…well I am counting down the days till preschool starts.
